When I was a little girl, I didn't like the Wizard of Oz. Something about the classic film creeped me out. Maybe it was the dark obstacles that Dorothy has to overcome on her journey. Maybe it was the weirdly human qualities of the Cowardly Lion. (If a story had animals, then by golly I wanted real animals!)
Whatever the case, I didn't fall in love with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz until I read the original story by L. Frank Baum. Suddenly, I could see what all the fuss was about! The magic, the humor, the whimsy, the charm! It's everything a children's bedtime saga wants to be, and it holds up to this day. This summer, I am reading an Oz collection that contains the first three books of the series: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, and Ozma of Oz. Time Magazine includes Ozma of Oz in their list: The 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time, so I'm especially eager to see what that one's all about. If you need some good Fantasy recs, take a look at Time's list. I've read 34 of their Top 100 Fantasy books so far. Some of those titles deserve to be on such a list, and some of them probably don't (in my opinion). Either way, I'm left with a long, long list of books I want to read!
